As someone who has grown up with Disney, there’s this urge to watch everything that has Disney mark on it. I guess I’ve always appreciated Disney’s magic (but not the commercialism). I think that this urge was the one that pushed me to watch movie like “Camp Rock 2: Final Jam”. Even though I know that I will be disappointed about the movie, I still have to watch it.
After watching that movie, thoughts came up. It started with how I miss 2D Disney animation movies that have a good story line. Princess and the Frog shows how 2D animation movies are not less fun than 3D animation movies. Then, I also noticed how the story lines in recent Disney movies such as High School Musical, Camp Rock and Hannah Montana have grown shallow.
Then I found one component that is never missing in any old or new Disney movies. As we all know, Disney movies are always built around theme of kindness, passion, friendship and solidarity, but in the story line there is always a common enemy. As far as I can recall, Disney movies never forget putting someone evil in the story to be a common enemy.
This brought me to a deeper philosophical question: do we really need a common enemy to be kind, passionated and united? As someone who is not quite convinced that evil exists in this world, I was wondering whether we will always search for common enemies so we can be kind, passionated and united. If this is true, then what kind of fake cruel plastic little spastic world is this? It’s not pretty.
But then I also think about how civilization progresses. Hundreds of years ago, people still think it is normal to invade a country to plunder the resources in it. A war might not be normal then, but when it was necessary it was not a taboo. Right now, a civilized society despises war. The society progresses and redefines their perception of war. So, it is also plausible to think that the humanity will also progress. The humanity must progress and abandon the necessity of having a common enemy to be kind, passionated and united. The humanity in the next hundreds years will be kind, passionated and united without any presence of common enemy.
This should be the progress of our generation. So are you ready to join the progress?
